lil things about Australia

This is going to be a continued updated section in my blog that fills you in about different and interesting things I encounter here that would be different in the States.

EXAMPLE,
make sure you look BOTH WAYS when you cross the street (yes you do that in the states) but here, they drive on the left side....

SHOTS
the most popular shots at a bar are WET PUSSY shots, QUICK FUCKS, and COCK SUCKING COWBOYS....
yes... i know....

Mate.... i mate is not someone you are spending time with like a bf/gf, husband or wife. A mate is used for everything. Getting someones attention, your friends are mates etc

Chips= fries
Heaps= Alot

I sometimes HAVE TO talk with an accent so im understood. so if I pick it up, that's why

vegemite IS delicious. Australians joke about their drinking habits and how they even use yeast extract on their food.

New Home, New Job...This is my NEW LIFE

G'day Mates...
Hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving. I ended up going to a feast where I was one of 2 Americans. It was nice to be able to celebrate but I will admit that it had been the first time I really felt homesick (understandable).

Thursday I moved out of my studio apt (Just in time! Bindy gave birth to a healthy baby boy this morning:-). I moved right to the beach which will be great because summer is beginning. I am living with 2 jewish guys that i found on a jewish networking site. The one that owns the place came out with Erica and I and a few mates the day before I moved in. I think that made it feel more comfortable once I arrived.
In fact, Saturday morning Erica called me in need of a place to live so she has been bunking up with me...which has made me feel very comfortable-with an even guy girl ratio;-) No but the guys are great! I feel totally chill with them and their funny! We went out with both of them and their friends sunday night and Im sitting here on the couch watching Zoolander with one of them and Er...

I had been offered the opportunity to work with an Owner of a pilates franchise. She hired me as her PA but is basically training me on the reformer and has me teaching heaps of classes. There had been some issues that were delaying the process but today, I signed contracts, taught two classes, and am beginning this journey. I will have afternoons free which again, will be great because its summer time. Its really cool to have this kind of experience in another country. A great spring board for an industry that regardless of the economy, people are STILL paying for. I am still working once a week at the Ivy which again, an industry people are STILL spending money on.

I never did the Bondi Beach Babe photo shoot because of the time and the hours at the Ivy. However, they called me to do an event this weekend and model in their launch party fashion show... Could be fun!

Been feeling a bit down with the holidays, daddys birthday etc but taking each day at a time, looking at these opportunities as something amazing
Looking forward to Fiji and then the Becker Bunch a few weeks after that. Hope all is well and PLEASE, keep me in the know

A little update on this sunday afternoon.... its 3pm and I just had a skype session with mom. Still in my PJs and happy to have NOTHING to do today. Work has been going well. Rob Schneider was in last week and this tuesday, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman along with the whole cast and crew of the movie Australia are renting the place out. That should be fun!!!

I didnt end up doing the Bondi Beach Babe photo shoot because of a desire for sleep. However, I DID do a photo shoot with Michelle Streimer ( a possible relative and handbag designer) check it out
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5883839

I also had an interview with a new Pilates franchise and they want to take me on as an apprentice!! Basically they are paying for my certification and coursework and in return, ill work for them at a lower rate. The owner has written and trademarked everything with a physio and has their OWN way of doing things. She has taken on Americans before and has even flown them out to Australia to help her at busy times. SO, it wil be a great way for me to get into the business, network and learn. One of the teachers was the choreographer of the Australia Lion King!!

Its funny that even though there is an economic recession, the two jobs I have, people are still paying for. Drinking and being social, along with staying fit.

Other than that all is well. O by the way.. I am going to fiji for New years:-) Fiji and Thailand are my two destinations while im over here and Mike has taken the holiday off of work so...we will be ringing in the new year on an island:-)
I am VERY excited!!!

Keep the emails and updates coming.... I miss you all!

For the Excitement

Well its been a busy week here but some exciting things have been happening.
Monday I was an extra in a music video for Cassie Davis. She is Sony BMG's new up and coming artist and will be released in Janurary. I am wearing a lime green tank top so if they use the footage, you will be able to spot me.

A few weeks ago I auditioned for a commercial and found out I GOT IT! Funny because its for KFC. Im basically dancing in it like at a party. There will be alot of freezing in the movement and with cuts and a number of takes, they wanted people who could remember their positions so only auditioned dancers. I will be filming tomorrow and am very excited.

I am also having a photo shoot with Bondi Beach Babes. They are a tourism/marketing company for stores and shops in Bondi and they are making a calendar with swimwear and clothes from the local stores. They keep post poning due to weather but if they like the shots of me, I could be in a calendar:-) If not, more shots for my portfolio :-) :-)

Ivy is great! I am really loving that I can rely on that job to make rent but still have my days to do things I want to do and pursue my career.

Hope all is well on your side of the world... GO OBAMA!!!
cheers

Its November already

Wow, how time flies. I must say, Halloween was fine but I think thanksgiving is going to be pretty hard. Phil and I have talked about having a dinner for our mates. I have already asked off of work so I can enjoy the festivities.
I worked on Halloween which turned out to be fun! I wore my hair in braids with a head band thing and was " native american" hehe get it? Saturday I spent the day with Michelle Streimer. We went out for coffee and then we shmyed around. She designs purses in her spare time so we headed to a fabric store to check some things out. They had chanel, D&G, and pucci fabric...it was really cool to see. We talked about doing a photo shoot and me modeling for her website so that could be fun. I went out to dinner and drinks with Erica Roth at the Ivy and had a blast. Got total VIP treatment starting off just by being escorted all over, getting INTO the actual VIP... and cutting lines etc. just nice to actually go out for once. Erica had to head out and shortly after my other friend erica came. We went to another Merivale bar and got drinks there, hung out, and I went back to Ivy to meet up with my aussie mates I met through phil. Theyre all like my brothers but nothing compares to mine.

Today I had lunch with the cohens (the family my place is connected to). They had Jasmine (streimer) and Daniel (her husband) over so it was good to see them. Oddly enough it was the first time ive felt homesick. Weird because they feel like family but I dont know what it is.

I am just hanging out for the afternoon and finally relaxing. I have a busy but exciting week ahead. Tomorrow I am shooting a music video for Cassie Davis. An up an coming artist for Sony. Just doing extra work but I think it will be a great way to meet people! Tuesday is Melbourne Cup day. A HUGE race that basically the entire country takes off of work for. I am working through my work travel company (over $20 an hour) and then off to the Ivy to work so it is going to be a looooooong day. Friday I am doing the photo shoot for Bondi beach Babes. They are a tourism company and doing a shoot for the different clothing stores. If they like my shots, I could be in a calendar:-)

Erica has decided to move to the city as well so we are going to start looking together. It would be great to live with an australian but we get along really well, shes gone during the days and I am gone at night so we're going to figure something out. Michelle is staying where she is now and I need to move soon so we shall see

All is well. I cant believe I have been here for over a month already. My travel and shopping bug are beginning to nibble but I cant let it bite just yet. I hope all is well and PLEASE email me with updates.

UPDATE

With the job starting, and me getting into a bit of a routine, here's a little update for you...

So The Ivy has been great. I like the fact that I can have my days to take classes, do things, go on auditions, and then work at nights. Ive been meeting alot of people so thats been great. In fact, I was out the other night and some guy goes to me "hey youre the American from the Ivy...SHELBY!!! With the Ring!" hahah that was funny

Saturday I went to the beach with a new friend Erica. We met at a group interview. She too studied abroad (but for 5 months) and loved it so she came back. A jewish New Yorker.... gotta love it.

Saturday night I met up with Erica Roth. A girl from Pikesville I have known for YEARS. What started out to be a night of just meeting for a drink, it turned into a night of random fun. We met up with her australian friends that ended up taking us out to Kings Cross. An area of all bars and clubs. I was still a bit under the weather so I made it an early night but non the less, a good time.

Sunday I met up with the other erica and we headed to the Australia Beer Festival. Yes yes, im not a beer fanatic but it was really cool to try all of the different stuff. We went to a birthday get together I was invited to at the Sydney Opera Bar (at the opera house along the water) and headed back to the festival. Ended the evening with Pancakes on the Rocks (a go to must in Sydney) Shes hilarious and a ton of fun.

Tonight I worked with a supervisor and a manager. I was the only bar attendant. It turned out to be really fun and a great way for them to get to know me. We all really warmed up to each other. They started to become very fascinated with my accent and had me record things on their phones. Liam, a manager was like "its as if we had paris hilton working for us" hahaha really!?!
The Pool Bar opened last week and apparently the place is crazy. I think I am going to go on Sunday with some of the staff. Im always too tired to drink and party after work so it could be a fun way of socializing and enjoying the weather.

A busy week ahead of work, taking classes, apartment searching for 2 weeks when I have to move out of here and some other things here and there. Hope all is well in the States with the Election coming up.

PLEASE send me an update email! misss u

The Ivy

So I started working for the Merivale corporation at The Ivy. A $164 billion dollar property, I would not call it "some bar". The place is INSANE and SO nice. Not a college park pub or anything like Baltimore. The Hemmes family is the owner and creator of this Vegas inspired scene. I am working at Ivy Bar. However, there are about 6 restaurants, bars, clubs, and even stores amongst the property. I am most amazed by the pool that opened this thursday. $1500 for a cabana and only "members" can get in. The "changing rooms" are amazing and it is actually a night club. Thats what the club is called. I cant imagine what will be going on in there.

There is a sushi train restaurant and at 10pm, employees can pay $15 for all you can eat. There are also a bunch of stores on the property where we can get discounts.

Yesterday some guy bought 3 bottles of moet ($140 each) just to send over to other people. This was lunch time and he was STILL there at 6:30 when I got off....
Everyone that come in is coming from work so it is a very nice and classy scene. No tank tops for me. We actually have to wear Ivy Jeans, converse that we get from them and a nice shirt that apparently retails for $100.

Sunday the Australian MTV awards after party is being held there. Very cool.

So, I will be working there here and there. Making my rent and money for the week along with new friends and a great learning experience ( I have to take 5 tests for it).

Welcome to my Crib

Home sweet home

Hey there,
I hope everyone has an easy fast today.  Happy birthday Max!

Well I finally settled into my new temporary place.  The woman whose house this is, is about to have a baby.  In 6 weeks her family is coming to stay so I am still in search but it is nice to be unpacked.

Today I went to services...4 hours, I think that is a record for me!  The sermon was about mistakes.  How there are no mistakes but that "everything happens for a reason".  Yes, when he said those words I think my heart skipped a beat....as most of you know, that is what I believe and always say.  Something I have been thinking alot about.   It was interesting hearing a rabbi speak with an Australian accent :-)

I came home and napped before heading to the Streimers for break fast (jasmin has been taking good care of me.  She's even the one that set up the living arrangement and her sisters are lovely)

I taught at Vclub again last night, filled out paper work for the Ivy and have a total of 2 interviews by the end of tomorrow.  SO, slowly but surely....no worries no hurries.  I am thinking about more corporate stuff these days.  Being able to dress up for work.  You KNOW im used to a routine and I am usually ALWAYS busy.  So im just trying to keep myself active and doing as much as I can to make progress.

Sending my love to all....check out my new pics

Welcome

Hey everyone,
welcome!  I figured instead of swamping you with emails, you could check me out on a blog.  That way it is up to YOU to stay updated:-)  I swear my life could be a tv show but a blog will have to do (if it gets too creepy...ill close it down)

Living:
Well I arrived a little over a week ago and staying in Coogee beach.  I have been "apartment sitting" for Jimmy, a kid that is studying abroad from UMD.  They are away in New Zealand so it worked out very well.
I spent the week and a half looking for places to move and had a short term offer come up through a friend. So, instead of rushing into a place, I will be staying there.

Job:
My first night that I arrived I was heading to WTC (work travel company.  They sponsored my VISA) I stopped into a dance, pilates, fitness club (www.vclub.com.au) and I gave them my resume.  Within the hour, they called me to cover a pilates class THAT NIGHT.  I received a staff card and have been taking dance classes there!  Pretty cool.  I taught ballet also a few days later.  One night after jazz/funk, I started talking to the teacher, Michelle. We hit it off and exchanged numbers.  Well within the past week we started looking for places together!  So dont fret fam, I wont be living with an asian male.  It will be cool to live with an Aussie girl...and an amazing dancer at that!

I also have been handing in my resume to places and actually had a trial run at a place called The Ivy (www.merivale.com/#/ivy/ivyroom).  They said they want to hire me but I am waiting to get my tax file number to fill out paper work.
I have an intership opportunity with a marketing firm that actually does marketing for tourism in Las Vegas (of all places lol)  However, it is not paid.  But it could be a good place to get my foot in the door and a place to go when im not working but am in the city.
Tomorrow night I am working at the Final Rugby game.  (like our superbowl)  WTC is like an agent for jobs so they called me for this one.
Slowly but surely making progress.

To be continued...
